I have never really been serious about skincare and makeup until a couple of years ago. Until now, I still do not have a super complicated skincare routine or makeup techniques. What I do know, however, are two things. One, it’s extremely important to find the perfect basic products for what your skin needs, and; two, a lot of the ingredients we put on our faces are not just harmful to us, but also the planet. So, for this blog, I am going to share what I think are the best eco friendly beauty brands for your basic skincare and makeup needs! P.S. I am also making sure that I include brands that ship worldwide!
Also, I just realized that it is already October! Here comes the cliche, but time really goes by fast. Anyway, if you know anyone looking to try sustainable and eco friendly beauty brands, you might want to check out the brands below for their early Christmas present! Speaking of Christmas presents, also check out post on some of my favorite affordable and sustainable fashion brands. You never know, it might give you some ideas.
Top on my list is my all-time fave, Lush. Lush is one of the biggest and most popular eco friendly beauty brands because of its trademark minimalist black pots and really affordable skincare line. Lush products not only utilize reusable packaging, but a lot of its products are event package-free. What I absolutely love about Lush is that you can return your containers in exchange for a free product! Win-win!
Love Beauty and Planet just proves that you do not have to spend a lot to save the planet. This drugstore brand has been true to its mantra of showing respect for the planet since day one. Aside from its recycled packaging, it also boasts of fast-rinsing haircare products to save water. Also, the brand taxes itself for going over its target carbon footprint by supporting programs that help reduce landfill waste and carbon emissions. Can you believe it??
Andrea’s Organic Market is one of those lowkey eco friendly beauty brands. Had I not stumbled on this lovely brand on Etsy, I would never have heard of them. But this Oklahoma-based sustainable brand is proud to be chemical-free, organic, non-GMO, and synthetic-free. It also uses gorgeous glass containers, 100% recycled paper, and biodegradable hemp string for its packaging. If you want to try this brand, I highly suggest buying one of its many shampoo bars or face masks!
Describing themselves as “skin and hair wellness enthusiasts,” the pioneers at Acure have made sure that all of their products are free of parabens, sulfates, formaldehyde, paraffin, and mineral oil. The 100% vegan brand also condemns animal testing. As a plus, the brand also recently launched its Recycling Program that allows its consumers to send in their used packaging for recycling. It even lets customers save up points that they can donate to a non-profit organization or schools.
Rainwater Botanicals is another one of my Etsy treasures. The brand handmakes a small batch of products to ensure quality and freshness. This also helps the planet because it does not waste ingredients typical in large productions. This all-natural brand also uses recycled packaging whenever possible.
Cocokind considers itself a “sustainable clean beauty brand” that is constantly working to become more earth-friendly and waste-free as much as possible. This eco friendly beauty brand uses glass bottles and jars, as well as cartons, for its packaging. It also recently transitioned to a domestic package manufacturer instead of an international one to minimize its carbon footprint. Plus, this lovely compan also boasts of a recycling program for its packaging. Go to their website to check out what else they have planned in terms of sustainability!
Tata Harper is absolutely one of my favorite eco friendly brands because of its 100% natural and zero-waste makeup products. While the brand is a little on the pricey side, it is completely worth it if you have a few extra bucks because everything is formulated, manufactured, and packaged by hand! Most of its packaging is made up of glass, so it’s super easy to recycle or reuse it as well. If you want to dip your toe into zero-waste makeup, I would suggest trying out their cute anti-aging blushes and lipsticks.
Zao is another one of my favorite sustainable makeup brands. I know that I keep saying this, but I could really vouch for any of these brands! Anyway, of the many reasons I love Zao is that its packaging and some of the ingredients it uses are made from controlled harvested bamboo. It also has a complete line of must-try makeup products for those that prefer a full face of makeup look. What’s more, it offers refills on its products to minimize waste! If you want to try any of its products, Zao also sells sample sizes so you can try what you like before committing to the full size. Soo convenient!
Elate Cosmetics is one of the more popular eco friendly makeup and beauty brands to eco-conscious consumers. This brand not only commits some of its sales to charity through its Social and Environmental Impact program, but it also offers paid time leaves for its employees to participate in social events. Its products are also packaged sustainably is currently around 75% zero-waste. Look at how cute Elate products are!
Ilia uses recycled aluminum, glass, and responsibly-sourced paper for its packaging. Similar to a lot of brands on this list, it also offers a recycling program for consumers. Although Ilia does not have a wide shade range like a lot of mainstream beauty brands, its products are quality and reasonably-priced. Plus, you can’t put a price on ethics!
There are sooo many more brands that I did not include on this list, but this list includes those that I’ve tried beforehand and swear by. If you want to see a longer list of the best eco friendly beauty brands, I suggest checking out this master list by Sustainable Jungle.
